Design Review Guidelines

When it comes to design review guidelines, Phil has produced over 80 manuals for communities across the country. The manuals produced in the 1980s for residential and commercial areas nationwide were among the first of their kind. Today they continue to set the standard for clarity and practicality, making the work of local historic commissions and review boards easier. Recent projects include updating design guidelines for Beaufort, North Carolina, Madison, Indiana, and Mandeville, Louisiana.

Our manuals typically include more than 100 illustrations providing property owners and review boards with concise information and realistic choices about appropriate rehabilitation and new construction. Phil continually tracks trends, new materials and fresh approaches to design guideline issues.

Phil speaks frequently about design guidelines and preservation planning issues at meetings and conferences across the country. He is a regular contributor to The Alliance Review, the newsletter of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions.
