Norris Freeway National Register Assessment, Norris, Tennessee
Designed by the architects of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Norris Freeway was built to facilitate the transportation of materials and personnel for the construction of the Norris Dam and the model community of Norris in 1934. The two-lane freeway was one the state’s first freeways and was designed to follow the natural contours of the landscape. Much of the freeway continues to retain integrity of its original design, and we are preparing a National Register eligibility study of the roadway for the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
